January 9: The Road to Palermo

We set off bright and early this morning en route to Palermo, the capital city of Sicily. Along the way we enjoyed the beautiful Sicilian views of the Mediterranean and of a rainbow across the countryside. A few of us even got a good nap in.

Hopefully this rainbow is a good omen for our adventures to come.

Our only site for the day was in Monreale, a small town located just outside of Palermo. Here we visited the Monreale Duomo, a cathedral built during the period of Norman control over Sicily. Construction of the duomo was begun in 1174 commissioned by King William II of Sicily (The third Norman King of Sicily).

After our visit to the Cathedral we checked out the nearby cloister (a courtyard) that was at one time part of a Benedictine convent attached to the cathedral . While we were there,  Mike gave us a challenge to find the 'goofiest' capital (the top of the pillars surrounding the courtyard). Below are some of the pictures that were selected as being pretty goofy.

After our adventure to Monreale, our tour guide suggested a small practical Italian Pasta bar Restraunt in Palermo called Basile Pasquale for lunch. With our hunger quelled we were free to spend the rest of the day exploring the city of Palermo.
